At Mount Sinai, three months after leaving Egypt, Israel receives the Ten Commandments as God establishes His covenant with them. God reminds the Israelites of their deliverance from Egypt and calls them to be His "kingdom of priests and holy nation" through obedience to His law. The commandments serve as a response to their salvation rather than the basis for earning it, defining how God's redeemed people should live in relationship with Him.
